When you book a trip to Crete, you know that you’re choosing a place that is perfect for a family holiday. There are great beaches, lovely calm waters of the Mediterranean to swim in and the whole island is really geared up to tourism, providing lots of different entertainment and activities for people of all ages, including the children.
Of course, most of the time all kids want to do is spend time on the beach, and there are plenty to choose from on the island of Crete. Two beaches that are worth the extra effort to get to are Elafonaissi Beach and Balos Lagoon. Elafonissi Beach has stunning pink sand and turquoise water laps the shore. As the beach shelves the water is shallow and great for young children. You’ll also find a handy snack bar and toilets behind the beach. The Balos Lagoon is at the end of a long bumpy track, and when you’ve parked the car you have to hike over some rocks to the reach the lagoon, but the sea is amazingly clear and beautiful and you’ll be glad you went the extra mile to get here.
You can take the kids on a boat trip to Spinalongo Island where’s there an ancient fort to explore. The kids will probably enjoy the trip over to the island on the boat as much as when they get to spend the day on the beach there – it’s a perfect way to spend the day. Another boating option is to take a glass bottom boat trip, where you and the children will see some amazing sea life, but from a dry and safe perspective!
Continuing the sea life theme, there are two great aquariums to visit on Crete. The Aquaworld Aquarium is in Hersonissos and there are interactive opportunities here, where the children get to feed and hold some of the aquarium inhabitants. In Heraklion, you’ll find Cretaquarium, where the animals include sand sharks, lobsters, turtles and seahorses. A visit to the aquarium can be a nice way to spend the day out of the sun – handy if anyone’s got sunburn!
Wherever you stay in Crete, you’re bound to find plenty of attractions to keep the children amused; these are just some of the best we’ve found so far. When booking a Crete flight, check out the local resorts and attractions and decide which resort will offer you the most things to do when you decide to take a break from the beach and swimming pool.
