William and Kate won’t be the only couple to take a holiday before their baby arrives. ‘Babymoons’ are becoming increasingly popular – but what should expectant mums be packing?
Holidaying with a bump
The term ‘babymoon’ was originally used for a period of tranquillity in the week or two after the baby’s arrival. In recent years, however, the term is more often used to describe a getaway for a pregnant mum and her partner, where they can enjoy one final fling before they become parents. Will and Kate headed off to Mustique, but many other couples will be enjoying destinations closer to home.
Of course, it’s not just couples expecting their first child that will be holidaying this summer. Mums expecting their second, third, fourth or even fifth child deserve a week or two in the sun. And these mums will have much less time to shop and pack than new mums-to-be! So what should these – and all expectant mums –be packing in their suitcase?
1. A stylish but supportive swimsuit
There is a great selection of stylish maternity swimsuits available on the high street now. If you only have a small bump you can still work a skimpy bikini but mums in their third trimester need the support of a one-piece.
Polka dots are a great choice for retro chic, or style up a plain black swimsuit with an animal-print sarong.
Maxi dresses are everywhere again for this summer. Choose from fun prints, striking colours or the understated elegance of the new LBD (the long black dress).
Chiffon is big news for this season, so if you are more petite opt for a maxi dress with a shorter underskirt and a chiffon layer to show a little leg.
3. A classic white shirt
White shirts, worn long and loose, were staples of many designers’ collections for this season, with Victoria Beckham and Preen, among others, pairing them with white skirts and shorts.
Easy to wear and effortlessly chic, a white maternity shirt is a great choice for daywear.
4. A pair of hip cropped jeans
Cropped jeans are another big trend for this season, as they’re a flattering and comfortable choice for expectant mums. They’re also great for those barefoot walks by the water’s edge as the sun sets . . .
5. Do-all denim shorts
No holiday wardrobe is complete without a pair of shorts. Opt for a youthful pair of denim shorts for maximum versatility. Wear over your swimsuit on the beach for trips to the café or wear with your white shirt or stripy top.
6. Straight-off-the-catwalk stripy tops
Stripes are another hot trend taking over fashion stores this season, after featuring in collections by Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior. Get the look with a hip stripy maternity top in black and white or navy and white.
