When it comes to getting out in nature, there are few places as good to explore as New Zealand. This friendly country is seemingly designed for long-term independent travelers that want to experience the best of an environmentally and visually stunning climate. Many choose to find the best campervans in New Zealand and tour around the country, stopping as long as they’d like in each place. For many of them, the search need go no further than Fiordland.
The country’s largest national park is something of an enigma. Everyone knows of Milford Sound, listed as New Zealand’s most famous tourist attraction. But beyond this beautiful landscape, there is far more to explore. For example, taking the Milford Track on a 53 km tramp through rainforests, wetlands, and even over an alpine pass allows visitors to get much closer to nature and further from their fellow man. One stop along the way is Sutherland Falls, arguably the tallest in New Zealand and one of the tallest in the entire world at 580 meters. Access to the track is severely limited and regulated during the high season, but during the low season it becomes much wilder and a real adventure to deal with occasionally dramatic weather conditions. Expect to be blown away.
Another great spot is Lake Manapouri, which has some of the clearest and cleanest water in the country, along with an impressive and well-conserved native biodiversity that is unmatched elsewhere in New Zealand. Visitors that come to camp and fish are endlessly impressed with the views of the Southern Alps, sereneness of the surroundings, and general sense of peace that abounds there. From here it is also possible to pass into Doubtful Sound, which is larger but much less famous and crowded than Milford. This rugged area has its own special energy that is tough to beat.
Fiordland National Park is listed as a World Heritage Site, and with good reason. Anyone that has an opportunity to explore the area should take advantage of it, because this is some of the most beautiful terrain in Oceania. Though roads are limited, the preferred mode of travel for true explorers is by campervan. Having a good value campervan is an invaluable asset to your experience, and we recommend planning your trip around the independence that this offers. Enjoy!
