It’s hard to avoid a party in Buenos Aires. With many bars open 24 hours and clubs open ’til dawn every night of the week, partying is by no means restricted to the daytime. Partying on a budget? Budget hostels are cheap if you book up in advance (you can get your own room for $15-20 if you shop around) but look a bit harder and you’ll find cheap apartments in Buenos Aires without too much trouble. Clubs and bars are reasonably priced, with many having no cover charge if you turn up early enough. Most clubs don’t really get going until 1am though, so stock up on Red Bull, relax in one of the city’s many outdoor cafés through the day and get ready for a night to remember!
Looking for something to do during the day? Buenos Aires hosts one of the most legendary and passionate derbies in world football between the haves of River Plate and the have-nots of Boca Juniors. Even if you’re not a football fan, if you don’t witness the spectacle for yourself you’re really missing out. Get your tickets early and bring a Spanish-speaker with you if you can. The volatile atmosphere can be intimidating, but the adrenaline rush of an entire stadium bouncing in unison will set you up perfectly for the night.
Nowhere does clubbing like Latin America and Buenos Aires is no different. There’s dozens of clubs and 24-hour bars to choose from in Buenos Aires with something for everyone. You can find lively clubs pretty much anywhere but Reclota, Puerto Madero and San Telmo are great places to start, while Palermo is probably the most popular and well-known area for night-life. Niceto is the number one club in Palermo; turn up at 10pm to see local and visiting bands then grab a Quilmes, sit back and watch as the crowd switches over for the thumping electro club night.
The gay scene
Buenos Aires locals pride themselves on their open-mindedness, so it’s little surprise that the city’s liberal attitude has made it the number one gay destination in South America. Many of the city’s clubs will have at least one gay-friendly night a week, and there are a number of clubs catering exclusively to the gay scene. Hosted every Friday in the converted Teatro Roxy, the fantastically-named Fiesta Plop! is one of the most popular gay party nights in the city.
